DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH

The way of saying something to someone is called Narration or speech. It consists of the words of the speaker. We have two ways of relating what a person "says/said/has said".

1. Direct speech/narration

2. Indirect speech/narration

1. Direct speech/narration: When we quote the speaker's actual words is called Direct speech. The sentence of speaker is kept under inverted commas.

जब वक्ता के कथन को ज्यों का त्यों उसी के शव्दो में कहा जाता है तो वह Direct Speech कहलाता है। Direct Speech के कथन को inverted commas के अंदर रखा जाता है। 

Ex: Hari said, "He is one of my friends."

They said to me, "We have prepared for competitive exams."

Note:-Inverted commas के पहला शव्द का पहला Letter हमेशा Capital होता है। 

2. Indirect speech/narration: When we report what the speaker said without quoting his actual words is called Indirect speech.

जब वक्ता के कथन को उसी के शव्दो में न कहकर उसे अपने शव्दो में कहा जाए Indirect Speech कहा जाता है। Indirect Speech में वक्ता के कथन को Inverted Commas के अंदर नहीं रखा जाता है। 

Ex: Hari said that he was one of his friend

They told me that they had prepared for competitive exams.

Some important definitions that we should know before learning conversion  

Reporting Speech:- The sentence which remains without inverted commas is called Reporting speech.

Inverted commas के बाहर मौजूद वाक्य को Reporting Speech कहा जाता है। ये प्रायः Inverted commas के पहले बाएँ तरफ रहता है। 

Note: लेकिन Inversion के प्रयोग होने पर ये Reporting Speech वाक्य के अंत में हो सकता है। Inversion का अर्थ जब किसी Subject के पहले Verb आता है उसे कहते है इसकी Details Adverbs Chapter के अंतर्गत पढ़ेंगे। 

             लेकिन Inversion का प्रयोग तभी होगा जब उस Sentence का Subject कोई Noun होगा Pronoun होने पर Inversion का प्रयोग नहीं हो सकता है। 

Reporting  Verb:- The verb which is used in the reported speech is called Reporting verb.

जो Verb Reporting Speech के अंदर मौजूद रहता है उसे Reporting Verb कहते है। 

Reported Speech:- The sentence which remains under inverted commas is called Reported speech.

Inverted commas के अंदर वाले Sentence को Reported Speech कहते है। 

Reported Verbs:- The verbs which remains in Reported speech is called Reported Verb.

जो Verb Reported speech के अंदर मौजूद होता है Reported Verb कहलाता है।
